CURRENT RIDES

Shaw Lee

16yr old Dark Brown TB Gelding CCI*** eventer

I was given Johnny as an unbroken, unraced 2yr old. I broke him in as a 3 yr old and have ridden him ever since, slowly producing him to 3*. He is an exceptional jumper, winning both SJ and SH classes as well as Eventing. Although he can be a bit hot on the flat, he has all the looks and moves and continues to improve with every outing.

After a trying eventing season, Johnny nailed Autumn 2017 with only three completed events due to trying weather conditions, we had three wins including being crowned National 3* 3DE Champion at Taupo in May. He was also runner up High Points Show Hunter Champion and second in the Derby at the National SJ Champs, as well as placing in two of his three SH rounds at HOY.

Johnny has continued to improve and in November 2018 we made the trip to Adelaide to compete in the CCI****. We completed an amazing dressage test to be sitting 4th in a talented field heading into XC day. Unfortunately our good form didn't continue and we struggled with an extremely tough track, walking home from the water after 3 refusals on course. We were in good company with a huge number of faults, eliminations and retirements on course...not that that made it feel any less disappointing though.

We started 2019 with a bit of a change of direction and I decided that instead of saving Johnny for major competitions as I have been for the past few years, that I would actually give him as many runs as possible in the build up to Taupo in May. We had a great season, and a fantastic Taupo finishing 3rd in the CCI****-L, ahead of all 8 Australian riders who had made the trip over as part of the Senior Oceania teams competition.

Antara

11yr old Bay Gelding by Anamor
Ant has a SJ background but hasn't done much in the past few years. He is a beautiful mover and has a lovely easy jump. Not without his quirks, Ant keeps me on my toes, but I have big hopes for him in the future.
We had an amazing Puhinui 2018 where he was leading the CCI* after dressage and XC, until an unfortunate rail in the SJ moved him down the placings.
He competed at a number of SJ shows over summer, stepping up to 1.20m with ease and getting some great results.
We stepped up a grade at the start of the Autumn season and had a great run in the CCN***-S in February. He then had an informed break due to throwing a massive splint which put an end to the rest of the season.
Ant has improved so much over the past 6 months and I am really excited about the upcoming Spring 2020 season. We have plans to step up to 4* so hopefully he makes the step up successfully

Enceinte

Couper is a 9 yr old TB Gelding. He is a gentle giant and is proving to be a special big guy. He went straight out to his first ever event at 95cm where he flew around the XC as if he had been doing it all his life. He is very honest, has lovely movement, good technique and I think he is going to be a super horse with a bit more mileage under his belt.

Couper won the first event of the Spring season at 105cm and will step up to 2* for the rest of the season

My TB Babies

In December 2019 I went to look at a young TB that had just finished racing. Long story short, I now have 3 lovely new horses Jimmy (5), Slim(6) and HR(5). They are all wonderful horses with their own personalities, strengths and quirks and I am really excited about working with them as they grow into their new role as sport horses.

Tallyho Orchid

Over summer 2019 I purchased Orchid from Tallyho stud as a bit of a project/potential pony for the kids to move onto. She is now a 6yr old wee gem and has been out to a number of competitions turning heads wherever she goes. She is in foal to Bizzie Canoodling and we are looking forward to seeing her beautiful baby at the end of the year.

Sold

Golden Kiwi

Rupert arrived at my place when his owner wanted some advice on how to deal with his behaviour. He never left!!

This Palamino beauty is a crowd favourite and turns heads wherever he goes. His jumping experience was limited, however he has an amazing technique and has had wins in the 95cm at both the SI 3DE in October 2018, and the SI One Day Champs in April 2019. He has had one start at 105cm and will hopefully step up to that level consistently next season.

We decided that Rupert really was too beautiful to be an eventer and even though he turned heads wherever he went, his heart really wasn't in the eventing game. I was approached about selling him and he is now in a fantastic home in Auckland where he can turn heads in the Show Hunter scene.

Impeccable

7yr old Bay TB Gelding

I own a half share in Percy with Tash Jones and we purchased him as a bit of a project as a 4yr old off the track. He is only small but moves beautifully and has a super technique.

Percy had his first season at 105cm in Autumn 2017 and apart from a few unfortunate issues (breastplate breaking over 1st fence in XC at SI 3DE requiring a detour to the truck park for a replacement incurring 88 time faults, and standing on a stone in the warmup for the SJ at Taupo 3DE and having to be withdrawn...after passing the trot up earlier that morning and sitting in 4th place) he was an absolute star. We attempted his first 1* at Central Districts and he was doing so well placing 2nd in dressage and having two rails in the SJ in very boggy conditions (not a single clear round in his class) before the event was abandoned due to too much rain.

Spring was a great season for Percy culminating in a win in the 1* at Puhinui and the bitter sweet sale of Percy to Australia early in 2018.

It was a tough decision to sell him, but what better home could we wish for than to go to Megan Jones...what a lucky boy. We wish them all the success and a long and happy future Eventing together.

Cracker

6yr old Chestnut TB Gelding

Cracker was bred by Donald and Jose Arthur and after a VERY brief racing career has come to see if his life as a Sport horse is more his style. He is very tall and lanky but is starting to mature into a stunning creature. He has a fantastic temperament and is very obliging, placing 3rd in the SI YEH 2017 and being successful in his first couple of starts at 95cm.

Cracker was sold in spring to a young rider in the North Island. He had filled out into such a magnificent creature and it was a tough call to let him go. Thanks to Donald and Jose Arthur who bred Cracker for giving me the opportunity to produce such a fantastic creature.

Charlie

6yr old Bay TB Gelding

Charlie has been on the scene on and off since he finished racing as a rising 4yr old. He is now a permanent resident and his cheeky face is enough to brighten any ones day. He is a real character, but a straightforward ride and showing loads of potential. He has had a couple of outings and we will do some work with him over winter ready for the Spring season.

After doing a couple of ODEs and some SJ/SH outings, I was approached about selling Charlie and he has now relocated to the North Island to continue his career as an Eventer. I am sure that his chilled out nature and natural ability will see him going on to do big things in the future...we will miss him!

Syd

Brown TB Gelding

Syd arrived on the scene while I was pregnant with my second baby Thomas. He was a freebee off the track and although the timing wasn't perfect to acquire another horse, there was just something about his upstanding presence that I couldn't resist. After competing him to 95cm, I decided to sell him and he now has a fantastic life with his new owner.

Rue

Bay 3/4 TB 1/4 Holsteiner Filly

Tara's next foal was born in 2014 and is by the Ramirez Stallion Remagen.

She is much taller and more laid back than her half sister Aria and was a pleasure to break in. She has had a couple of short stints under saddle and nothing seems to phase her. One to watch in the future.

FUTURE RIDES

Born in October 2017 we have a lovely colt and filly by Remagen. The colt named Simba is out of mums Perfectly Ready mare Maddie and the filly named Bella is out of Gus Taylors Ngahiwi mare Gizzy. Both foals are lovely types with stunning movement. Although Bella has a bit more spirit that Simba, they are both showing the lovely natures that seem to be standard in the progeny of Remagen.

In 2018 we had another two foals arrive....this time for a change, they were both coloured. The first was a stunning filly out of Mums Gisborne coloured mare by Remagen. She was a favourite at Wai Eyre stud where she foaled and was named Lexi after the Stud Managers Daughter as she was besotted with her. The second foal on the ground was Indy. She is out of Maddie, by Bizzie Canoodling and is a wee cracker!!

PAST SUPER STARS

Dambala

Grey Stationbred Gelding CCI**** eventer (2000-2015)

Oscar began eventing when I was fortunate enough to be offered the ride on him in February 2010, and after a fantastic start to his new career, we went on to win the SI 3DE CIC*** in April 2011.

He had a bit of a stop start career with a number of different injuries meaning he had to have time out, but when he was competing he was the ultimate professional and the most beautiful horse to ride. His career highlights included winning the National CCI*** at Taupo in 2012 and being crowned NZ 3* Eventing HOrse of the Year in 2015. This was a great way to end his NZ Eventing Career, heading over to America to contest the Rolex Kentucky CCI**** in April 2015. After a great Dressage performance and the most amazing XC round I have ever ridden, he was sitting in 16th position. Oscar pulled up lame from the XC and it was later revealed that he had suffered major damage to the support structures in his off fore and due to the extent of his injuries the most difficult decision to euthanize him was made. The Horse Capital of the world is a fitting resting place for the most beautiful horse I have ever had the privilege to ride and compete.

Southern Ben

Liver chestnut TB Gelding. CCI**** Eventer (1996-2014)

Ben was the first horse I rode at 3 and then 4* level. My mum purchased him as a 4yr old off the track and on numerous occasions I was told that he didn't have what it took to be an upper level horse. However he proved everyone wrong and although he was not the most orthodox horse, he had the most amazing attitude and always tried his heart out. He taught me so much and gave me so many opportunities including competing at the Adelaide CCI**** in 2005 and Badminton CCI**** in 2008. After a tendon injury in 2008 he returned to NZ and after a 2 year rehabilitation made a full recovery from his injury. Unfortunately his return to competition was short lived as he developed a heart issue and could no longer be ridden.

Let's Be Frank

Dark brown TB Gelding. CCI*** eventer born 1997

I was fortunate to be given the ride on Frank when he was already competing at 1* having been produced to that level by Glen Beale. We had a successful season competing at 3* before a suspensory injury meant he had to be spelled. Unfortunately after a long recovery from this injury, he aggrevated it in 2009 and we decided to retire him from upper level competition. He is now mums hack, and despite his age, he is still very energetic and full of the joys of life, managing to keep mum on her toes most of the time.

Lewis

Bay TB/Warmblood Gelding 2004

Winner of the South Island young Event Horse class at the South Island 3DE April '10

Lewis is a gentle giant and became part of the family, having been with us for 12 years. He was very successful up to 2* level and easily made the step up to 3*. He had the most massive movement and jump which took a bit of riding, but he tried so hard to please and had the most incredible scope. So gentle and willing, he was a real pleasure to train, ride and compete.

Lewis has been retired from Eventing and is now living the life of luxury with his fantastic new owner as a dressage horse/happy hacker.

We had a successful Autumn season culminating with Johnny finishing 3rd in the CCI****-L at Taupo National 3DE Championships. He was an absolute superstar all weekend and I was so proud of him.

The South Island One Day Champs at McLeans Island in April also went really well, with three of my five rides for the weekend in the Winners Circle for the prize giving. Shaw Lee won the CCI****-S, Golden Kiwi won the Open 95cm and Sea Mist (owned by Kay Buckley) was 2nd in the 4,5 and 6yr old 95cm class.
